Choosing the Right Bee Yard
A practical guide to sunlight, drainage, flight paths, water, predators, access—and the inconvenient lessons we learned from our first apiary.

Check the Rules First
This is especially important if you live in a town, city, subdivision, or residentially zoned area. There is no single set of backyard-beekeeping rules for the entire US. State laws may regulate some aspects of beekeeping, while counties, cities, and towns may determine where hives can be kept.
Depending on where you live, local requirements may address:
- If beekeeping allowed in your zone if permits, registration, or limits on the number of colonies are required
- Setbacks from property lines, roads, and neighboring homes
- Fences, hedges, or other flyway barriers
- An on-site water source
- Swarm prevention and nuisance management
- Other location-specific safety requirements
Some municipalities prohibit beekeeping in certain locations altogether while others have very minimal regulations for personal use. If you rent your property or live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association, check your lease or HOA rules as well. Some restrictions may be rooted more in fear or misinformation than modern bee-management practices. Respectful community education can sometimes help, but the written rules still apply.
Start with your local zoning or planning department and municipal code. Then check with your state Department of Agriculture or State Apiarist's office. All of this information should be available online and relatively easy to find.
Relocating an established colony because it violates a setback requirement or HOA rule can be difficult—and may leave you with nowhere legal to place it.
A commonly followed rule is to move a hive less than 3 ft or more than 3 miles at a time. Small moves help bees adjust gradually while farther moves trigger them to reorient. There are methods to successfully move hives shorter distances that we will cover in another article.
Sunlight, Shade, and Climate
Our apiary in the mountains of Virginia experiences very different conditions from a bee yard in southern Florida or West Texas. Elevation, humidity, wind, summer heat, winter exposure, and surrounding vegetation all affect whether a location will work well.
Watch the sun through the seasons
An east or southeast facing entrance is a useful starting point, especially in cooler climates. Morning sunlight can warm the front of the hive and encourage earlier activity. It is a preference, however—not a universal requirement. A dry, accessible, safe location is more important than achieving a perfect compass direction.
Deep, persistent shade can keep a site cool and damp. At the other extreme, colonies exposed to intense afternoon sun in very hot climates must devote more effort to cooling the hive. In much of the country, morning sun with some protection from the strongest afternoon heat is a practical balance.
Observe where the sun reaches in the morning, at midday, and late afternoon. Deciduous trees that provide excellent summer shade may offer no wind protection in January. A site that is dry in August may collect runoff during spring rains.
Wind, Drainage, and Overhead Hazards
Provide shelter without enclosing the yard
If strong winds are common, place a windbreak beside or behind the hives, about 4-6 ft away and roughly 6 ft tall (approx 1 ft above your hivestack). A tree line, evergreen shrubs, solid fencing, etc. can provide protection. Avoid blocking the area directly in front of the entrances, and do not enclose the apiary so tightly that air cannot circulate.
I've heard of beekeepers having success using wooden posts and windblock material when other options were not available. Look for HDPE material. The USDA recommends effective farmstead/livestock windbreak density around 60–80%. This one is highly rated and 70% density.
We placed our current hives in a field with a tree line beside and behind them. It softens some of our bitter mountain winds while leaving the entrances and working area open.
Choose high, well-drained ground
Drainage deserves its own site check. Avoid low spots, seasonal flood paths, ponding water, roof runoff, and areas that remain muddy after a storm. Ground moisture makes the working area unpleasant and can contribute to damp conditions around the equipment.
Look up as well as down. Dead limbs, unstable trees, ice-shedding rooflines, and anything likely to fall or drip onto the hives can turn an otherwise attractive location into a poor choice.
Water and Forage
Establish water before the bees arrive
Bees use water to help regulate hive temperature, dilute stored food, and feed developing brood. If you do not provide a dependable source, they may choose a neighbor's pool, a livestock trough, a dog bowl, or any other place where they are not welcome.
Provide water before installing the bees so they can orient to it from the beginning. Keep it reasonably close to the apiary, available during active foraging periods, and consistent. There is no reliable universal maximum distance that guarantees bees will use one source instead of another. We have a creek that flows during much of the year and supplement it during summer droughts.
A quick inexpensive option is to use a chicken waterer (this is one we have used and recommend). Place it a bit off the ground or hang it to keep the bees out of tall grass. Add some pebbles or rocks to allow the bees to land without easily drowning. If you have several hives, you will need a few of these so they don't become overcrowded.
Bees are often attracted to water with an odor or mineral content so don't stress about having fresh, flowing water. Refill small water stations often enough to keep them functional and prevent mosquito larvae or significant algea growth.
Look beyond the garden
Honey bees commonly forage within roughly one to two miles of the hive when resources are available, but they can travel farther when food is scarce. That means your pollinator garden does not need to sit directly beside the apiary—and the flowers visible on your property are only a small part of the colony's forage area.
Evaluate the broader landscape across the entire growing season. Look for a succession of flowering trees, shrubs, pasture plants, gardens, and crops rather than one spectacular bloom followed by months with little food.
Also ask what is sprayed nearby. Orchards, crop fields, mosquito-control programs, lawns, and roadside vegetation can expose foraging bees to pesticides. When possible, communicate with neighboring growers and applicators about bloom times and planned treatments. Some states offer voluntary pesticide-notification programs; your state Dept of Ag can tell you what is available where you live. We were able to call our local power company and have our property added to the no-spray list.
It is impossible to control every element, do what you can and move forward. We are fortunate to be in a remote area bordering National Forest. This drastically minimizes chemical exposure.
Flight Paths, People, and Neighbors
Honey bees need a clear runway in front of the entrances. We try to preserve roughly 10 - 15 feet of unobstructed flight space as a practical planning guide, not a mandatory measurement. Some recommend 15 - 20 ft.
Face entrances away from:
- Doors, porches, sidewalks, and frequently used gates
- Children's play areas
- Dog kennels, livestock pens, and feeding stations
- Mowing routes and other regularly maintained spaces
- Roads, parking areas, and neighboring gathering spaces
In a smaller yard, a solid fence, dense hedge, or similar barrier can encourage bees to rise above head height soon after leaving the hive. The barrier should redirect the bees without trapping the beekeeper in a cramped work area.
Keep children and visitors outside the working apiary unless they are supervised and properly protected. If the yard is near a path or other area where someone might approach unexpectedly, post a clear Bee Yard sign. Electric fences should have their own warning signs.
Tell household members and regular visitors where the hives are located. People who have children or a known serious bee-sting allergy should receive ample warning so they can make appropriate safety decisions. A sign and a good flight path reduce surprise; they do not eliminate the possibility of encountering a bee elsewhere on the property.
Think about visibility and unauthorized access, too. A secluded yard reduces accidental encounters, but a site that can be checked from the house or another frequently used area makes it easier to notice storm damage, tipped equipment, fence problems, or animal activity.
Hive Stands, Spacing, and Room to Work
Build for weight and stability
We prefer hive entrances about 12 to 18 inches above the ground. It keeps equipment away from ground moisture, reduces bending during inspections, and may make it harder for some ground-level pests to work at the entrance.
Our first hives sat on landscape timbers threaded through cinderblocks. The setup looked sturdy, but the timbers began to bow under the weight after the first year. A tall, productive hive can weigh hundreds of pounds during the honey flow. We now use individual cinderblock bases and plan for each support to safely hold over 300 pounds.
Adjustable metal hive stands are another popular option. We have never used them personally but they are quick and easy to set up.
Whatever stand you choose, place it on stable ground, keep it level from side to side, and make sure it cannot rack, sink, or tip. A slight forward tilt can help rain drain away from the entrance. Rooftop and elevated installations also require careful consideration of structural capacity, wind exposure, safe access, and falling-object risks.
Leave working room
There is no universal spacing requirement between colonies. Commercial apiaries may place hives only inches apart, while smaller bee yards often allow several feet between them.
Our current hives are spaced about five feet apart on center. That gives us room to stand beside and behind each colony, set down a lid, move boxes, and work without leaning over the neighboring hive. If hives must sit close together, varying entrance directions or using distinct visual landmarks may help reduce bees drifting into the wrong colony.
Plan for growth even if you are starting with only one or two colonies. Swarm catches, splits, replacement colonies, and temporary equipment can consume open space surprisingly quickly.
Access and Upkeep
Your bee yard must remain reachable when the grass is tall, the ground is wet, or the honey supers are full. Walk the entire route from your equipment storage area or vehicle to the proposed hive location and ask:
- Is the slope manageable while carrying a heavy box?
- Will a truck, cart, or mower fit through the gate?
- Does the route cross a creek, ditch, loose rock, or muddy area?
- Can I reach the colonies in winter or after several days of rain?
- Is there enough space to turn around and load equipment safely?
We now use medium honey supers. that can weigh up to about 60 pounds when full. Deep supers get up to 90 lbs. and quickly became unmanageable for us. Shallow supers are lighter, but they can still approach 40 to 45 lbs. Easy vehicle access is not a luxury when several boxes need to come out at once.
Plan the groundcover before bees occupy the yard. Gravel or mulch can reduce constant trimming. Mowers and string trimmers create noise, vibration, exhaust, and flying debris close to the entrances. We wear a full vented beesuit, avoid bumping the stands, and keep exhaust and clippings directed away from the hives.
AVOID cutting during mid-day. This is when the hives are most active and defensive. Cool early morning is best but late evening, just before dark is an option. ALWAYS wear a suit, even if you think your bees are calm or you'll be quick. Better safe than sorry... really sorry.
Predator Protection
Predator protection starts with how you set up the bee yard—not after something has found your hives.
Get the hives off the ground. A sturdy hive stand makes inspections easier, keeps equipment away from damp soil, and provides an important layer of protection from small predators. Skunks are particularly notorious for scratching at the entrance at night, drawing guard bees out and eating them. Raising the entrance at least about a foot forces a skunk to expose its more vulnerable belly to defending bees rather than feeding comfortably from ground level.
Watch for predatory wasps and hornets. Yellowjackets and other wasps may hunt honey bees around the entrance or attempt to raid a colony, particularly in late summer and fall and when a colony is already weak. Keeping colonies strong, maintaining a clean bee yard, reducing entrances when needed, and using robbing screens can help bees defend themselves. In our original bee yard we had yellow jackets nearby but put off eradicating them thinking they were far enough away. That was a costly mistake that we didn't address until one of our two hives was severely weakened. There will always be pests but when you're starting out with nucs, it's best to get them built up into a strong colony before any avoidable stresses are added.
A quick distinction: Varroa mites, small hive beetles, wax moths, mice and other hive pests are important to monitor and prevent, too—but they are more closely tied to ongoing colony health and seasonal hive management. We’ll cover those separately in our healthy-hive management articles.
And then there are BEARS. If black bears are present where you live, we strongly recommend planning an electric fence before bees are placed in the yard. Once a bear learns that a bee yard contains brood and honey, keeping it from returning becomes much harder. Electric fencing is one of the primary methods recommended for protecting apiaries in bear country. Electric fences are a DETERRENT, they give a clear, non-lethal zap to the soft wet nose of a curious bear. If the bear is bound and determined, they will push through.
What we used: Look for low-impedance systems with high output (6-7,000 volts and min 0.7 or higher joules). We installed a Parmak Deluxe Field Solar-Pak 6 (DF-SP-LI) solar fence around our bee yard. After moving our bee yard to a location visible from our house and using our farm dogs to watch over, we moved it to our garden. We have been using this since 2018 and don't have any complaints.
Our current bee yard is isolated but clearly visible in the distance from our house. Our outdoor farm dogs patrol the property, ignore the deer, and deter bears and other predators without chasing them down. This works for our farm, but we do not recommend assuming that a family pet will safely or reliably protect an apiary. We have lost one hive in our current yard to a curious young bear before the dogs scared him off. A secure barrier is the safer general recommendation.
From Our Bee Yard
What We Learned From Our First Location
We thought we had planned the perfect first apiary. We placed two hives on a flat section of a hilly field within reach of a creek. They faced southeast, sat behind a tall windbreak, and were surrounded by a bear-resistant electric fence. Wildflowers grew nearby, the ground was dry, and the yard was quiet and away from the children and dogs.
What neither of us considered was how inconvenient the location would be to maintain.
Reaching it required crossing the creek on two telephone-pole-sized logs. That was manageable on the way in. It felt very different on the way out while balancing a 60-pound box of liquid gold in a bee suit.
The mower could not cross the creek, so both the path and bee yard had to be trimmed by hand. The vegetation grew quickly. During August, the creek dried up and we had to carry water into the yard. Late summer in the mountains added rattlesnakes, ticks, and temperamental wasps to the trip.
We used that first yard for about four years. After moving into the house we were building on the property, we relocated the colonies and expanded the apiary.
What we chose differently the second time
- Easy truck and equipment access
- Individual, weight-bearing hive bases
- A dependable nearby water source
- Southeast-facing entrances
- Natural wind protection and afternoon shade
- Good drainage and no routine foot traffic
- Visibility from the house
- Room to work and expand
No bee yard will be perfect. The goal is to recognize the problems you can prevent and choose a site you can safely manage year after year.
